Big Fish Casino Review

Big Fish Games bets on a winner with their social gambling game Big Fish Casino

If the only sure things in life are death and taxes, the eventual legalization of real money mobile gambling is in the very next tier of inevitability. Big Fish Casino will be headed that way in the UK very soon, but it's already live on iOS, Android and Facebook in the US as a free casino sim. It's still fun in that form, keeping your hard earned dough mostly safe... for now.
Big Fish Casino is essentially an updated version of Card Ace: Casino, made possible when Self Aware Games was acquired by Big Fish Games earlier this year. Players who have spent time on Card Ace will find that their account information, chips, gold (the game's premium currency), achievements and friend lists have all made the jump to the new game with no action required on their part.
Newcomers start with a virtual bankroll big enough to sample everything, and the variety of casino games offered is impressive. The Facebook edition includes slots, blackjack, Texas Hold 'Em poker and a second power game that also has a Scrabble-like word-building element. iOS players also have access to roulette and video poker, with the promise of these spreading to other versions in the near future.

What all of the games have in common is a commitment to social features. You'll always be playing with other humans, even in normally single player pursuits like slots and video poker. Chat windows make it easy to get a conversation going, and if you have some extra chips to spare, you can attempt to acquire some new friends by sending people a virtual cup of joe or an adult beverage. And if you don't have any chips left, you can use the giant red chip to launch the in-game purchase screen, wait four hours for the refillable bonus, or hound your friends to gift you some.
Speaking of friends, Big Fish Casino provides numerous tools to invite yours to the party. The iOS version can be linked to your Facebook, Twitter and Game Center accounts and can even use your email list to add people from your contact list. Once your buddies are on board it's easy to play with them, since all of the games have friend-only and invite-only modes.
The hazard faced by general casino titles is the whole “jack of all trades, master of none” syndrome, where the gameplay in the individual games suffers when compared to standalone apps. That's certainly the case for theBig Fish Casino slots, which don't have nearly the sophistication found in a number of other places. There's some other wonky stuff too, like the very short time you have to change your bet before the next hand in blackjack, but otherwise, everything plays very well. The options available in poker are a pleasant surprise, especially the inclusion of Sit and Go tournaments.

On mobile devices, the game looks even better than it plays. The developers made sure to use every available pixel on smartphones and tablets, and the graphics are bright and attractive. The interface is also extremely intuitive, with pretty much everything accomplished with a simple touch or drag.
I wish I could say the same for the Facebook version, but since I'm not running for public office, I should probably be truthful here. The game is strangely squashed into the top 40 percent or so of a maximized browser window, and using a mouse makes the interface a lot less enjoyable to navigate. Add in the fact that there are less games to play on the Facebook side, and the iOS experience simply stands out as superior in every way. It's almost like Self Aware is trying to subtly get you to play it on mobile for its own nefarious ends (cue evil laugh).
Okay, that's probably an over-dramatization. Big Fish Casino is a good casino sim on Facebook and an excellent one on iOS devices. Whether our friends across the pond take to it for real money gaming or not, it's going to have plenty of people in the US and elsewhere playing for free before too long.

Pros:

  • Offers six different casino games with excellent presentation and an interface that's easy to use. Loaded with social features, including chat windows in every game and the ability to host private tables. Largely overcomes the tendency of multi-game casino sims to be light on gameplay options.

Cons:

Expedia – Book Your Hotel Rooms

As a frequent traveler, I’m always comparing hotel room costs. Even though I’m a frequent guest at Hiltons and Marriott Hotels, I often to travel to places where neither a Hilton or Marriott is the closest hotel, nor the least expensive. This is where an App like Expedia comes in. Before this App, I used Hotel Pal and the developer of that App has ceased development and now points people to download Expedia instead. I gave it a shot and I have to admit that I really like it better than Hotel Pal. The interface is better and faster. Not to mention that it’s a Universal App and Hotel Pal never was. The App works as you would expect. You can search your immediate area for rooms around you or you can search a specific location. If you find a room you want to book, you can book it right in the App. I also use the Hotels.com App and again i like the Expedia experience a little better from a User Interface experience.
You can sort your listings by Price, Popularity, Rating or Distance. You can also Filter by specific hotel names, ratings and price ranges. Best of all you can sign in with your existing Expedia account to make the booking go even faster. The biggest downside to an App like this is that it’s a one trick pony. It would be nice if it also allowed you to book air and ground transportation as well. Aside from that, there is definitely no reason not to have this App in your travel arsenal.

Tank Domination IPAD Review

Patton would be proud

World of Tanks is, to put it bluntly, a phenomenon. While offering a different style of gameplay, I wouldn’t hesitate to call World of Tanks as popular as other free-to-play multiplayer offerings like League of Legends orDOTA 2. And like those games, it was only a matter of time until somebody decided to take this winning formula mobile.
The “somebody” in this case isn’t World of Tanks creators Wargaming.net (whose own mobile version, World of Tanks Blitz, was announced back in March), but Game Insight – a top developer of free-to-play games for the casual mobile market.
Tank Domination
2013 has seen something of a change in focus for Game Insight. The company that was built on the success of games like Mystery Manor and The Tribez has been voraciously pursuing the midcore sector with releases likeDragon Eternity and Starborn WanderersTank Domination isn’t just their latest foray into market; it’s their biggest and boldest gamble yet.
And yes, it’s one that pays off.
Like the aforementioned World of TanksTank Domination is a game of team-based tank warfare. In this case it’s a 10v10 online deathmatch where the goal is to take the other team’s base or wipe every opponent out before doing so. Before I go any further, I’d like to slow down and let that sink in for a minute. 10v10. That’s 20 players playing simultaneously on the iPad. And for the most part, it works without a hitch.
The controls take a little getting used to, but after a few battles they’ll feel like second nature. An on-screen left thumbstick will control the movement of your tank while a right thumbstick will control your turret. Controlling these separately feels intuitive in similar games that use a mouse and keyboard, but for some reason it takes a little experience to really feel comfortable with here. Much of the fun in games like this is realizing that your turret might not move as fast as your eyes, so you’ll want to have your head on a swivel well in advance of needing to aim. Because of this, your initial experience might be “the aiming in this game is @#$%!” Push through it. You’ll adjust, and you’ll be thankful that you did.
Tank Domination
Every aspect of your tank – including turret speed – can be modified by upgrading your parts. New parts will unlock for purchase as you level up your tank, with special parts (and speedy levelling) available through premium currency. Eventually your tank will level out, and you’ll want to buy another. Soon you’ll be switching back and forth between a whole stable of armored asskickers.
Having multiple vehicles – especially early on – is important. Tank Domination is a “when you’re dead, you’re dead” game, and your tanks will be unavailable to use until the match they were participating in is over. If you have just one tank, you won’t be able to jump into a fresh battle right away.
Avoiding death, though, is the real goal of Tank Domination. The longer you survive, the more lambs you can lead to the slaughter. This means learning your maps, learning vehicle weaknesses, and using the terrain to your advantage. If you’re under attack and there’s a hill, use it to disappear from your assailant’s field of view. Not doing much damage to the opponent for some reason? Aim for the back of their tank instead. And above all else, keep moving. You’re no good to my team if you’re dead.
The maps themselves are varied in size and layout, and are incredibly well designed. I’ve yet to come across a map where I said “ugh, not this one again.” The more I play each map, the better I feel I’m getting at the game. That alone deserves an award in terms of map design.
Tank Domination
There are a few weird hiccups in the system that you might encounter, but they’re the sort of thing that Game Insight should be able to iron out quickly. In one instance I was greeted with the words “LStoreOverload” instead of “TO BATTLE!” because my storage (or “depot” in Tank Domination speak) had too many items in it. In another instance, there was a period where every time I tried to jump into a battle I was given an error and sent back to the main menu (or “hanger” – I love a bit of military jargon).
Little niggles like this are easy to overlook though; both because the game is still in its first week and because everything else is so top shelf.
With Tank Domination, Game Insight set its sights on a seemingly impossible challenge. Not only did they want to take a successful PC formula mobile, they wanted to do it in a way that wouldn’t disappoint. What they’ve done with Tank Domination is an incredible accomplishment, and assuming the game is as successful as its quality warrants, I’d be very excited to see what crazy impossible project they’re looking to tackle next.
